Moving beyond North Carolina?
Use the national ISP lineage lookup for Metronet, Quantum Fiber, Frontier, Ziply and other selected relationships. Read the transaction scope and current account notice before assuming a provider changed at your new address.
NorthState → Lumos → T-Mobile Fiber: separate network and retail roles
Lumos: NorthState and Lumos Networks unify the brand, August 15, 2022 [1] documents NorthState and Lumos Networks adopting the unified Lumos brand in 2022. T-Mobile: Lumos joint venture closes, April 1, 2025 [2] documents the April 2025 joint venture acquisition and transition of many Lumos customers to T-Mobile Fiber. It describes Lumos’ infrastructure role and T-Mobile’s customer relationship; it does not identify every current account as having completed migration.
The FCC-hosted NorthState/Lumos copper-retirement notice (historical) [7] names affected addresses in the High Point, Thomasville and Archdale rate centers. It is a historical copper-retirement notice, not a current town-wide fiber service map. Town of Wallburg: utility and helpful links [8] identifies Lumos as formerly North State Communications. Neither reference establishes the plan, retailer or physical drop at every home.
For an existing account, use the latest bill and official migration notice to confirm the provider, login and support route. For a new order, run the address through the current official fiber checker. Do not count NorthState, Lumos and T-Mobile Fiber as three independent qualified offers solely because a directory lists all three names. T-Mobile’s cellular 5G Home service is a different product from its fiber offer.
Start with the High Point, Archdale, Trinity, Kernersville and Greensboro research guides. They do not assert uniform migration or overlap across a ZIP.
Windstream → Kinetic: the brand does not identify the last mile
Windstream: Kinetic brand expanded, 2017 [3] documents Windstream’s expansion of the Kinetic brand across its local footprint. The current Kinetic NC directory [10] identifies research locations, while a home’s qualification determines the actual product and tier.
Ask whether the quote is for fiber to the home or another wired connection. Confirm the ONT or modem, typical uploads and downloads on the eligible plan label, and whether an existing copper service must be replaced. A Windstream or Kinetic name on a bill does not by itself prove a fiber drop. Compare Kinetic ordering questions with a written address-qualified offer.
Time Warner Cable → Charter / Spectrum: a rebrand is not an upload specification
Charter: Spectrum and Time Warner Cable corporate history [4] records Charter’s 2016 acquisition of Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks. Spectrum is the consumer brand; an old Time Warner Cable account name does not indicate a separate independent line to the same home.
Spectrum’s residential broadband disclosure [9] includes location-dependent download/upload tiers and symmetrical exceptions. Confirm coax versus fiber to the premises and read the eligible label. Do not assume a universal 35 Mbps upload ceiling, that a high-split upgrade changes coax into fiber to the home, or that a new subdivision automatically receives FTTP.
Use the Spectrum product guide and two-quote calculator to compare required equipment and the actual rate after a promotion.
CenturyLink → Brightspeed: transferred accounts can still use copper
Brightspeed: acquired Lumen operations launch, October 3, 2022 (PDF) [5] documents Brightspeed’s October 2022 launch after acquiring Lumen local operations across 20 states. Brightspeed: transferred CenturyLink and Quantum Fiber accounts [6] explains transferred CenturyLink and Quantum Fiber account information. This is a footprint-specific transaction; it does not mean every CenturyLink account nationwide became Brightspeed.
The acquired operations included copper and fiber. A Brightspeed logo on the bill or a nearby fiber build does not prove the home has been upgraded. Use Brightspeed’s current product and eligibility research [11], confirm the actual home, and ask about the physical line, installation status and uploads.
Five checks before comparing a renamed service
| Older name | Relationship to research | Confirm today |
|---|---|---|
| NorthState | Lumos brand; later T-Mobile retail transition | Latest bill, migration notice and current fiber offer |
| Windstream | Kinetic consumer brand | Fiber vs. legacy copper and the eligible label |
| Time Warner Cable | Charter / Spectrum | Current product, coax vs. FTTP and actual uploads |
| Transferred CenturyLink account | Brightspeed in acquired operations | Current account route and fiber vs. copper |
- Read the provider name and account number on the latest bill.
- Use an official account notice to resolve the current support and login route.
- Identify the connection installed at the home: fiber/ONT, coax/modem, copper/DSL or wireless.
- Compare new offers for the same exact street address and unit, including typical uploads and downloads.
- Confirm installation and equipment returns before cancelling an active service.

Questions before you order
Availability, prices and provider terms need confirmation. Here’s where to start.
Contact usAre NorthState, Lumos and T-Mobile Fiber three different options at my home?
Not necessarily. The historical brand and retail relationships can refer to the same underlying network. Check the current bill, account notice, address-qualified offer and physical connection before counting independent options.
Does a new Kinetic or Brightspeed name mean I have fiber?
No. Confirm whether fiber, coax, copper or wireless reaches the actual home and read the eligible plan label. A name change or neighborhood construction announcement does not prove an upgrade.
Does Spectrum always have slow asymmetrical uploads?
Do not assume one universal upload tier. Spectrum publishes location-dependent upload and symmetrical tiers. Check the exact connection and eligible plan label before comparing a home’s performance.
