Can your current provider serve the new home?
Use the full address and unit number, not just the town or ZIP code. A transfer only makes sense after the current provider confirms service at the destination. New construction and apartments can also require questions about address records, existing wiring and property access.
Spectrum’s official moving page tells customers to check the new address before arranging a transfer and to verify equipment compatibility before taking equipment along. That is provider-specific guidance; other providers may use different processes.
A listing saying “internet available” does not tell you which account, connection or appointment you can transfer. Use the NC internet guide for provider starting points, then qualify the actual property.
When is a transfer worth comparing with a new order?
| Situation | Next question |
|---|---|
| Current provider confirms the new address | What happens to the plan, cost, equipment and appointment when transferring? |
| Current provider cannot serve the property | Which other provider can confirm service, and how do you close the old account? |
| The property needs installation | What readiness, access and confirmed appointment are required? |
| Move-in or closing date may change | How do you reschedule, and what happens to activation, billing and the old service? |
A transfer may fit your needs, but compare its actual terms. Do not assume the old price or promotion follows you. For a new order, include setup, equipment and old-contract questions rather than comparing only an advertised monthly figure.
What should be confirmed before you cancel or pack?
- Dates: the old service’s end date and the new service’s confirmed activation or installation details.
- Equipment: what can move, what must be returned and how the return is documented.
- Access: who needs to be present and whether a landlord or property manager must approve access.
- Charges: installation, activation, overlap, cancellation and any remaining equipment balance.
Keep the provider’s order reference and contact route with your moving paperwork. A preferred date is not a confirmed appointment. If your closing or lease date is uncertain, explain that before accepting arrangements.
Where practical, confirm the new connection works before finishing the old cancellation. Ask about any charges for overlap. The timing depends on the providers and your agreements; this guide does not promise an interruption-free move.
What belongs in your moving conversation brief?
Prepare the current provider, exact destination, expected move-in date, important work or school needs, equipment questions and current agreement’s end date. Keep account passwords, payment details and sensitive codes out of general messages.
Tarheel Connect’s moving concierge is a place to discuss home internet, security, DIRECTV and mobile questions together. Each service still has separate eligibility, terms and ordering routes.
Use the 16-item moving internet checklist for the wider handover, from choosing service to testing Wi-Fi and returning old equipment. This article handles the earlier transfer decision; the checklist helps you carry the plan through.
