Start with the TV account, not the name of the Wi-Fi network
Write down the internet provider, TV provider and the company collecting payment for each app. A TV screen showing several services does not mean one company supplies or bills them all. Check the current bill and subscription settings before asking an internet salesperson to remove a service.
DIRECTV’s internet-pairing guidance [1] describes internet and DIRECTV as separate purchases and bills. Its streaming service needs a working internet connection; changing broadband does not itself submit a TV cancellation or create a replacement TV order. The selected account, device and connection still need to qualify.
| What you use | What to confirm before the internet change |
|---|---|
| TV supplied by the current internet provider | Whether the exact TV package, app sign-in and equipment can remain after an internet-only change; request the revised bill. |
| DIRECTV streaming | The active TV account, new connection, supported device and home-network settings. |
| DIRECTV satellite | Which viewing uses the dish and which selected features or apps use internet; keep equipment and account instructions separate. |
| An individual streaming app | Who bills it, how it was activated and whether an inclusion or discount depends on another service. |
Confirm the replacement connection before choosing an end date
Give the complete street address and unit for the new internet quote, even when you are staying in the same home. Ask which product can actually be ordered, the equipment required and whether setup needs an appointment, outside work or an approved self-install. A local fiber announcement or ZIP result is a research starting point rather than an accepted order.
Prepare the TVs that run at the same time, any work calls and other household activity. Use the busy-hour speed worksheet and room-by-room Wi-Fi checks. The chosen internet tier and the connection from a router to the TV are different parts of the plan.
Keep the new provider’s order reference and confirmed setup details. Where practical, leave time to test the new connection before ending the old one, and ask what overlap will cost. This is a handover plan, not a guarantee of uninterrupted viewing.
If you keep DIRECTV streaming, check the home-network setting
DIRECTV’s home-network instructions [2] link the streaming home location to the home connection. After changing an internet provider, check the connection status in the DIRECTV app or Gemini settings and follow the instructions for the selected account. Devices away from the designated network can have different viewing limits.
DIRECTV currently limits home-location changes to four within twelve months and says to change the setting for a move or an internet-provider change. Avoid repeated resets as a general troubleshooting step. If the correct home connection is not recognized, use DIRECTV’s account support rather than choosing an unrelated location.
Changing a router’s Wi-Fi name does not settle the TV account’s home-location rules. Keep an ordinary household connection test separate from account settings, device compatibility and the right to view a particular program.
Compare the revised bills and included apps
Ask the current provider for the total after removing only the service you intend to replace. Record which TV, phone, mobile or app benefits remain and which charges change. An app logo on an old bill does not answer whether its subscription will continue or who will charge for it after the change.
Keep a short subscription list: app name, billing company, sign-in method, inclusion conditions and the next decision needed. Resolve an existing subscription before starting a second one for the same household. Do not assume a new package automatically cancels an old payment arrangement.
Add the confirmed replacement internet bill, retained TV bill, setup and overlap over the same months. The internet quote calculator helps compare the broadband portion; keep a separate TV line so it is not counted twice. Unknown fees remain questions rather than zero-cost assumptions. The mobile and internet cost guide covers another service that can affect the comparison.
Test the actual viewing setup before finishing the switch
- Connect the main TV and other viewing devices to the intended new home network.
- Check that each app opens with the correct existing account.
- Test a normal live channel, any important local programming and the on-demand features you use.
- Try the household’s ordinary simultaneous viewing arrangement, within the account’s rules.
- Save the old provider’s cancellation confirmation and equipment-return instructions once the handover is agreed.
DIRECTV’s compatibility guide [3] checks device models and software, rather than treating every smart TV as supported. For a game or regional channel, use the program-specific viewing checklist; an internet switch does not remove package or event restrictions.
Bring the internet and TV questions to one conversation
Tell us the current services, the household viewing needs and the full address you want qualified. We can discuss eligible new internet and DIRECTV ordering options through Tarheel Connect. Your existing provider handles its own cancellation, billing and technical account changes; we do not promise to change another account through a general message.

Questions before you order
Contact usDo I have to cancel DIRECTV when I change internet providers?
A broadband change and a DIRECTV account change are separate decisions. Check the selected DIRECTV product, billing, supported devices and the new connection. Existing-provider TV packages and included apps need their own account-specific review before canceling any service.
Can I keep a streaming app included with my old internet package?
Ask the company billing or supplying the app to confirm the exact inclusion conditions and post-change cost. Keep the current subscription and activation method visible before opening another account. This guide does not promise that an included app or discount transfers.
Does changing the Wi-Fi name move my DIRECTV home location?
Check the DIRECTV app or Gemini home settings separately and follow the current account instructions. A router name does not establish the recognized streaming home network, supported devices or the account’s viewing limits.
Can Tarheel Connect place the internet and TV order automatically from this page?
No. Call or text us to discuss options and qualify the complete address. You review the eligible product, full cost and terms before approving an order. The provider confirms acceptance and setup separately; the website inquiry prepares a customer-controlled email draft.
